Here at Mum’s Place, we are always bringing in amazing new items that have inspired us to create beautiful vignettes. This month, for our Four Furniture Picks for August, we are inspired by the sandy hues and weightless fabrics abundant in Coastal Design. In the heat of the summer, all we want to do is jump in that sparkling blue ocean and lay out on the beach, and both of these vacation activities are what inspire Coastal Design. But with our four picks, we are going to add a few metal and glass elements to reflect the industrial setting of our Monterey Furniture Store.
Omni Living Room Collection by Flexsteel
This occasional collection by Flexsteel includes everything from cocktail tables, to end tables, to chair-side tables, providing a cohesive look for your whole room. Made out of travertine, the stone tops of these pieces look “unfinished” and sandy, a rather casual look that works with lots of different coastal interior design elements. Because the Travertine stone appears unfinished, it is very durable and any blemishes or wear will only add to its casual character. The industrial dark metal legs contrasts the stone beautifully without taking any focus away from the look. The metal legs, though dark, are still relatively natural looking while glowing with beautiful gold undertones. Available in both circular and square shapes, this collection will allow you to soften the space with nice, easy curves of the circular tables, or provide more structure to the space with with sharp corners.
Of course the shapes of the tables you choose depend on the amount of space you have for your home. If you live here in Pacific Grove, you likely have a smaller home, and furniture for a small space will be your friend. One element of small space furniture is the use of circular tables as they tend to allow you to move more easily through your space.
Alt 40 Sofa by Burton James
Burton James is a brand new manufacturer that we just started carrying. Based in Southern California that is committed to sourcing materials and laborers locally. With a sustainable practice and accessible design, Burton James provides a self proclaimed “Casual Elegance.” This casual elegance is another coastal element that is essential to the style. This Alt 40 Sofa is completely customizable with fabrics, and it can be made as a sectional if space allows it. But what makes this sofa unique is the split track arm that adds an extra elegant detail to this otherwise modest sofa. The square back cushions take away any opportunity for any excessive detail and the chunky leg places it in a modern setting. Available in a multitude of beautiful fabrics, this sofa can be dressed up or down, but to stick to a coastal style piece, a textured sandy fabric or sleek white fabric will pair perfectly.
L’Usine Console by Hooker
One of our all time favorite accent collections is the L’Usine Collection by Hooker Furniture. The console table is the ultimate accessory for any room in the house. Made out of both solid hardwood and reclaimed wood, this piece is a beautiful mix of natural and man-made materials. The metal hardware and leg supports are minimalist accents that refine the look of the reclaimed wood, while the subtle pattern on the doors add a bit of ornament and speak to the amazing craftsmanship of Hooker products. Hooker uses a 16-step finish process that contributes to a great richness of the color and durability.
This piece will look great as a tv stand, a china cabinet in the dining room, or a credenza in the entryway. The removable and adjustable shelf lets you customize the piece to your needs, and the four drawer console provides a ton of extra storage. Pair this with some crisp white, grey, or beige upholstered sofa and complete the look with some metallic accessories.
Affinity Bedroom Collection by Hooker
We had a hard time choosing just one piece out of this collection, so we’re going to show off all four of the bedroom furniture pieces. The collection combines beautiful rounded forms with soft upholstery and antique hardware. The bed in particular emulates casual beachy vibes, with the off-white linen headboard and quartered white oak. The grey/beige finish is referred to as “greige” by Hooker, a color that is perfect to describe one of the most popular coastal finishes. The bed is incredibly simplified considering it is upholstered. With no tufting or carved wooden details, the upholstered panel seems to float between the two wooden supports.
The Affinity Three Drawer Nightstand has all the same elements as the bed, minus the upholstery. The corners are rounded to reflect the cylindrical supports of the headboard, and the antique white hardware adds a beautiful but minimal accent. To switch it up, the top of the nightstand is glass, adding a new element to the mix, making any accessory on the top of the nightstand appear to float. The glass also allows light to illuminate the items on the shelf underneath.
To compliment the nightstand, the Affinity Dresser is almost a larger version of the nightstand, but it doesn’t have the glass accent. With six large drawers and two smaller ones, this piece holds a lot of storage. Mount a mirror above the dresser to complete the look and make your room look more spacious!
Finally we have the Affinity Bachelor’s Chest that takes on a slightly different look from the other pieces from the collection. This three-drawer chest is finished to be “greige” but the front of the drawers are wrapped with the same linen fabric as the upholstered headboard. This softens the already casual vibes of the storage pieces while tying everything together. This fabric-wrapped chest is an ultimate coastal accessory.
